The Architecture of Survival, with nine poems from Avrom Sutzkever's Geheymshtot
Last year, I was commissioned to translate nine poems from Avrom Sutzkever’s collection Secret City (Geheymshtot) for this catalogue, published by the German publisher Hatje Cantz: https://www.hatjecantz.com/products/65735-architecture-of-survival
The catalogue accompanies the exhibit of the same name at the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt: https://www.juedischesmuseum.de/en/visit/detail/architekturen-des-ueberlebens0/ It also features an interview with the filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, along with essays on the exhibition.
The exhibit will last for one more month, so be sure to visit if you happen to be in Frankfurt (I wish I could see it in person myself). The Sutzkever poems are among my favorites that I have translated (and I have translated around a hundred at this point). I hope to include them in a future selected edition of Sutzkever’s work.
